Biofeedback

What is biofeedback?

Biofeedback is a mind-body technique where you are trained to improve your health using signals from your body.  During biofeedback, you are connected to sensors that measure and receive information (feedback) about your body (bio) in real-time.  These measurements can include heart rate variability, respiration, finger temperature, sweat levels and muscle tension.  The feedback help you make and recognize changes in your physiology, reducing stress and increasing relaxation.  Biofeedback is empowering – putting you in charge of your own body and healing.

How many biofeedback sessions will I need and how often?

Biofeedback is considered a short term treatment, usually consisting of 8 – 12 session.  Ideally, sessions are conducted weekly to maximize positive results.  When sessions are attended regularly and self care is practiced at home consistently, improvements are often experienced by the 3rd or 4th session.

How long are biofeedback sessions?

Biofeedback sessions are 45 minutes each.

Are biofeedback sessions conducted in person or virtually?

Biofeedback sessions are currently being conducted virtually using video.  Clients can purchase inexpensive home biofeedback equipment to be used during and in-between sessions.  Equipment won’t be needed for the first few sessions.

What ages can benefit from biofeedback?

Jen works with clients ranging in age from 8 – adult.  Kids and teens tend to pick up biofeedback techniques even quicker than adults.

Is biofeedback an invasive treatment?

No.  Biofeedback is not painful or invasive in anyway.  The monitoring equipment is topical – it merely touches the skin.  The sensors amplify signals and translate those signals into date to be viewed on the computer screen.   No electricity is conducted into the body.

If I’m seeing a counselor for anxiety already, can biofeedback still help?

Biofeedback compliments talk therapy.  You’ll learn how to recognize your stress signals and be able to control the body’s response to stress, stopping the anxiety before it escalates.  When you control your physiology with biofeedback, you’re better able to utilize any cognitive therapy skills you’ve learned.
